A childcare space has to do two jobs at once. It has to hold up to years of hard use by small humans, and it has to feel like a place those small humans (and the bigger humans who watch over them) want to spend their day.
The CEFA Early Learning centre on Shelbourne asked us to build to both requirements at once.
The reception desk was the signature piece. Bright yellow Corian wrapping the front face, fabricated and seamed so the colour reads as one continuous surface. Corian gives you a solid, repairable, hygienic material with no visible joints, which matters in a space where sticky hands and cleaning staff are in constant contact with every surface.
The bathroom vanities were the other fun part of the job. Counters and sinks sized for three and four-year-olds, built at a height that works for them and not for us. Durable finishes throughout, soft edges where it counted, and cabinetry detailed to survive the kind of daily wear a daycare washroom actually sees.
The rest of the space carried the same brief: bright, functional millwork that reads as playful to the kids and practical to the operator. Laminates and solid surface chosen for longevity and easy cleaning. Hardware specified to take abuse.
Story Construction ran a clean job from start to finish, which made our part of it straightforward. Good coordination on site, clear communication on schedule, and a design team at WA Architects who knew what they wanted. Projects go well when the whole group is pulling in the same direction, and this one did.
